Underarms are meant to resemble the same color as the rest of your skin. But most of the
time the skin under your arms turns dark due to various reasons and can embarrass you.
Girls who like to wear sleeveless are too conscious about their underarms as darker
underarms can shatter their confidence.
What are the causes?
Alcohol-based deodorants and anti perspirants
Waxing and shaving
Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, acanthosis nigricans & obesity.
Friction and excessive rubbing
Bacteria or fungal infections
How to prevent it?
Avoid body sprays like deodorants.
Laser hair removal instead of shaving or waxing.
Weight reduction in case due to obesity or acanthosis nigricans
Treat the infection earlier if any.
How to treat it?
Always consult your dermatologist before planning on treatment. You need to have a proper evaluation and examination to rule out the underlying cause. Dark underarms are mostly harmless and do not pose a threat by any means, still, they should not be left untreated.
Creams- We use creams or gels like kojic acid, retinoic acid or hydroquinone cream based on the severity and after evaluation.
Chemical peels- We use deep peel or a medium peel for peeling underarms, based upon your skin condition. Most of the time a medium peel is enough to exfoliate the skin and remove additional melanocytes.
Laser therapy- Q switched Nd YAG laser targets melanin deeper in the skin thereby treating hyperpigmentation issue.
